Lack of sleep

Lack of sleep can reduce the hormone responsible for decreased appetite and increase the hormone that makes you feel hungry, prompting you to eat more and increasing levels of visceral fat.

The fatty substance hiding deep within the abdominal cavity can increase your risk of serious health problems, ranging from diabetes to heart disease. Poor food choices can set the stage for this type of belly fat, but your diet isn't the only risk factor, according to the research.

It is no secret that good, healthy sleep is the cornerstone of a healthy life. And a new study published in the journal Sleep Medicine suggests that not getting enough sleep each night may make you more prone to visceral fat.

And unlike subcutaneous fat, you cannot squeeze visceral fat between your fingers. This type of belly fat builds up around your torso and surrounds some of your vital organs, contributing to a beer belly and apple body shape. The research looked at both men and women between the ages of 18 and 59. Using X-ray imaging, the team calculated the participants' body fat percentages. The average amount of sleep among the subjects was just under seven hours.

The results indicated that one hour less sleep, with a target of seven to eight hours, was associated with an overall increase of about 12 grams of visceral fat mass. The researchers also noted that the benefit of sleep duration stopped at eight hours. One of the reasons that may explain the link between sleep deprivation and levels of visceral fat is that lack of sleep leads to abnormal regulation of activity in different parts of the brain affecting the reward center, sleep and appetite.

It is believed that sleep deprivation causes a decrease in leptin - the hormone that reduces appetite - and an increase in ghrelin, the hormone that signals the brain that it is time to eat. Moreover, it also causes systemic deterioration that affects eating and sleeping patterns. The researchers suggested that this could explain the higher calorie intake and the consequent weight gain. Inadequate sleep can also lead to insulin resistance, which many scientists associate with high visceral fat.
