Detecting and treating the causes of dry eye syndrome

Half of all people suffer from dry eye syndrome, which develops gradually, and to treat it, its causes must be known, and only in this way can its development be prevented. Dr. Dmitry Dementiev, an ophthalmologist, indicates that this disease develops gradually and requires timely treatment. According to him, dry eye syndrome is a disorder the process of wetting the surface of the eyeball. And the tears that should moisturize the cornea evaporate quickly, which leads to stripping it, and thus losing the properties of its contact with the surrounding medium.

He adds: Symptoms of this disease: redness of the eye, excessive tearing. The injured person usually complains of rapid tears when going out into the street, especially when the wind blows. From increased sensitivity to bright light, discomfort without sunglasses in sunny weather. The person also feels as if there is a foreign body in his eye, and he tries to remove it. He also complains of feeling dry eyes and pain when blinking, as if the eyelids are stuck to the cornea.

According to him, there are many tests to determine dry eye syndrome, the most important of which is called the "Schirmer's test", where a strip (blotting paper) is placed under the lower eyelid for five minutes, and from its saturation level, the amount of tears produced by the lacrimal gland during this period is determined.

And he adds: Dry eye syndrome, if not treated, can develop into a chronic disease that gets worse day after day. Therefore, it is important to diagnose this disease in time and start treating it immediately to avoid keratitis, conjunctivitis, and decreased corneal transparency.

One of the causes of the disease is working for a long time on the computer and electronic devices, because when looking at the computer screen we do not blink, so tears evaporate quickly, and this is a predisposition to developing dry eye syndrome.

The other reason is age, as with age the amount of tears produced by the lacrimal glands decreases, which leads to a lack of saturation of the fatty layer. Also, a lack of concentration in vitamin A and D levels leads to dry eyes. Dry air also contributes to the development of dry eye syndrome, as it accelerates the evaporation of tears.

According to the doctor, many types of eye drops are sold in pharmacies to treat dry eye syndrome. All over 50 years of age are advised to use it daily, in the morning and evening.

The specialist advises taking vitamin A and D, and drinking plenty of water, especially in hot weather.
