In an interview with Moslenta newspaper, Russian biochemist Maria Koleshova dispelled a common belief about the dangers of drinking water during food.

Kuleshova explained that this apprehension about drinking water during meals stems from a common belief that water dilutes digestive enzymes in the stomach, which reduces acidity inside the stomach and thus affects the quality of the digestion process.

She stressed that there is no evidence or research to support the hypothesis that drinking water with meals can impair digestion, cause bloating, or reduce digestive juices in the stomach.

According to her, the argument about diluting gastric juice (digestive enzymes) is easily divided into two simple facts, the first is that food contains a high percentage of water, and the second is that gastric juice also contains a high percentage of water.

She explained that one liter of digestive juice in the stomach contains 995 milliliters of water, and that the glandular cells in the stomach will produce hydrochloric acid until the pH level reaches the required level.

She indicated that it is possible to drink water during meals, but it is preferable to avoid consuming soft drinks or sweet drinks that contain large amounts of sugar.

  "There will not be much difference between drinking water, tea or coffee, except that tea and coffee can cause heartburn and flatulence," Kuleshova said.

The expert noted the need to avoid drinking water while chewing, and to chew food carefully so that saliva enzymes are well absorbed, which is necessary to facilitate the natural digestion process.

And she stressed the need to be careful while eating and not to rush and rush into a binge, taking small sips of water while eating.
