Eating processed foods leads to cancer
2:37:4 2023-06-12 1422

A recent study found that eating common, ultra-processed foods may increase the risk of cancer.

The UPF items included in the study funded by Cancer Research UK and the World Cancer Research Fund included breakfast cereals, mass-produced bread, ready meals, ice cream, ham and crisps.

The research team from Imperial College London, who led the study, found that these nutrients may have some association with an increased risk of various types of cancer due to their obesity-causing properties and low nutritional value.

Study co-author Dr Kiara Chang said: “Processed superfoods are produced with synthetically derived ingredients, and food additives are often used to adjust color, flavour, shape, texture or extend shelf life. Our bodies may not react in the same way to these ingredients. " .

And ultra-processed items usually contain ingredients that people don't naturally add when cooking homemade food such as chemicals, colorings, sweeteners, and preservatives designed to extend their shelf life in store-bought foods.

However, not all processed foods are bad. The NHS says some foods require processing to make them safe, such as milk, which needs to be pasteurized to remove bacteria.

Previous studies have indicated a link between ultra processed substances and, heart disease, dementia, obesity and type 2 diabetes.
