The Green Iraq Observatory warned of the continued unjust hunting of endangered animals in Iraq, while indicating that the unjust practices of hunters continue even in the breeding seasons of animals and birds.

The observatory said in a statement, “This day, October 4, 1931, was Animal Day, and its goal was to improve care and people’s view of them in all countries,” adding, “This occasion is an opportunity to shed light on animals that are threatened with extinction in the country, due to hunting practices.”

The observatory explained, "The most prominent threatened animals in the regions of central, southern, and western Iraq are the sand gazelle, the Maxwell's water dog, the Euphrates shark, the mountain ibex, and the White-eared bulbul.

Green Iraq continued, "Hunters, in their cruel campaigns of unlicensed poaching, do not hesitate to practice hunting during the breeding seasons of animals and birds, including in the Kurdistan region," explaining that "there has been a continuation of hunting bears, pigs, and rare wild sheep, for years without interruption."

He pointed out that "there are species that have definitely disappeared from the environment of the marshes and the areas adjacent to them, such as the maneless lion, which the Russian consul in Basra, Alexander Adamov, said in his book (The Basra Province in Its Past and Present), published in St. Petersburg in 1912, "the maneless lion that 50 years ago, he used to roar terror in the souls of passengers on ships that sailed across the Tigris at night. Nowadays, he has become just a legend.

The observatory stated that “excessive overfishing leads to a number of disasters, most notably the reduction in the number and species of animals, and thus directly affects biodiversity and changes environmental systems and the local economy.”
