A new study reveals that human activity warming the planet will also have a very detrimental impact on the planet's natural salt cycle.
Researchers from the University of Maryland, the University of Connecticut, Virginia Tech and other institutions combined their expertise to document what they described as an "existential threat" to freshwater supplies.
The team looked at a variety of different salts and in a range of different environments, including salt concentrations in rivers and in soil. Some events, such as the drying up of lakes, increase salt concentrations in the air.
Among the study's findings is that about 2.5 billion acres of soil worldwide have been affected by human-caused salinization, and that salt used to deicer roads also finds its way into the air.
The increasing salinity of freshwater sources is one of the biggest concerns. If this trend continues, finding enough water for the world's population to drink could become a real challenge – and that's before we get to the damage to other animals and their habitats.
Geologist Sujay Kaushal from the University of Maryland says: “When too much salt accumulates on the planet, it can affect the functioning of vital organs or ecosystems,” according to a study published in the scientific journal “Science Alert.”
Salt levels affect life more than you think, from how much snow forms on mountaintops to how likely we are to get respiratory diseases.
“This is a very complex issue because salt is not considered a primary contaminant of drinking water in the United States, so regulating it would be a big task,” Kaushal says.
