Russian scientists have developed a new method for treating obesity in children, through “smart weight reduction.”
A research group based at Saratov State Medical University analyzed a new concept of non-surgical brain stimulation for obese children.
The combination of transcranial magnetic stimulation and transcranial electrical stimulation led to a significant increase in previously low levels of hormones (testosterone and endorphins), and vice versa, and this led to a decrease in appetite and body weight, according to the results of the study published in the Russian open-access medical journal.
The Press Center of Saratov State Medical University explained that transcranial stimulation of some brain structures that affect appetite is done through devices that create an operating magnetic field, along with electrical stimulation.
The center indicated that these devices were developed in partnership with local manufacturers in Saratov.
For her part, Professor Nina Bolotova, a professor in the Department of Prevention of Pediatric Diseases, Endocrinology and Diabetes in Children at Saratov State Medical University, confirmed that “the proposed study methods for treating obesity using devices in addition to nutritional therapy lead to a significant improvement in the metabolic process.” and weight loss in patients.
Scientists point out that obesity in children worsens during puberty, while in adults it leads to early disability and death. Experts say that the problem can be largely attributed to our modern lifestyle, including eating a lot of sugar and fast food, and lack of exercise.
