Dr. Hossam El-Deeb, Consultant in Rheumatology and Joint Diseases at Cairo University, confirmed that rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease, in which the immune system mistakenly attacks the body’s tissues, causing inflammation in the joints. He explained that the symptoms of rheumatoid disease include swelling, severe pain, and inflammation in the joints, especially when waking up from sleep, the patient feels severe pain and stiffness in the joints.
The rheumatology and joint disease consultant said that the disease is diagnosed through conducting medical examinations, and if the infection with rheumatoid disease is confirmed, treatment is resorted to, with periodic examinations being performed every 3 months, and if any changes or differences in symptoms appear, a doctor must be visited immediately.
He added that rheumatoid disease is considered one of the diseases most affected by the onset of winter, and symptoms and problems increase in cold weather, noting that there are some other factors that increase the severity of symptoms and problems, such as not taking treatment regularly, and extreme stress, as the psychological state greatly activates the disease.
He continued his speech by saying that diet and daily diet affect rheumatoid arthritis, such as eating unhealthy foods that contain a high percentage of oils, fats, and fried foods, and smoking activates rheumatoid arthritis.
The rheumatology and joint disease consultant advised rheumatoid patients of the necessity of regular examination and adherence to treatment because rheumatoid disease may cause joint deformities, stressing the importance of eating healthy foods such as fish, vegetables, and fruits, and staying away from fried foods and foods that contain a high percentage of fat.
