First: Define the purpose of the conversation
When you talk to your child to guide or advise them, set a specific goal for the conversation and work toward achieving it. Don’t try to address everything at once, as too many topics can dilute the message. One clear goal is more effective than ten unachieved ones.
Second: Repeat your child’s name often during the conversation
Mentioning your child’s name shows implicit recognition and affection, and expresses your desire to engage in conversation. This makes the dialogue easier, helps your child soften toward you, and makes your words more acceptable no matter the subject.
Third: Praise your child and focus on positive words
Praise your child and use positive words like “excellent,” “amazing,” “genius,” or “champion.” Repeating such words programs your child’s subconscious mind positively, instills confidence, and motivates them to achieve and be creative.
Fourth: Practice the art of listening during the conversation
One of the most important communication skills for effective dialogue is listening. It’s more than just hearing; true listening is deeper and has a greater impact on meaningful communication.
Fifth: Smile during the conversation with your child
A smile is the magical key to hearts. It is the silent language of dialogue and is considered an act of charity. As the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “Smiling in your brother’s face is charity.” So, offer this charity to your child — those closest to you deserve your kindness the most.
