Use Bono Thinking Method

The psychologist Edward de Bono wrote a famous book titled Six Thinking Hats, which refers to six different modes of thinking. The general idea of the book is that sometimes we need to form opinions or make decisions based on different perspectives. These are:

  • White Hat: Look at the facts and information in front of you. Identify any gaps in your knowledge and work on filling them so that the information you have is complete.
  • Red Hat: Look at the issue from the perspective of others. (How will customers respond to this decision or new direction?) Or (Will people feel fear because of this change?) Or (What might the customers’ reaction be?)
  • Black Hat: Look at the issue or decision you intend to make from a negative point of view. For example: (What is wrong with this decision?) or (Why might this proposal fail?)
  • Yellow Hat: Also look at the issue from a positive point of view, such as: (What is good about this decision?) or (What makes it likely to succeed?)
  • Green Hat: Consider the decision in a creative and innovative way. (Are there other ways to come up with new ideas?)
  • Blue Hat: View the decision you want to make from the perspective of a team. This requires holding a meeting or session to gather various feedback. In other words, use the method of participation and consultation when making your decision.
