Alī (a) accompanied the Prophet (s) to the outskirts of Mecca and joined him in performing prayers. One of the Prophet’s companions, a merchant named ʿAfīf al-Kindī, reported on the early days following the initiation of the Prophetic mission (biʿtha). During a business visit to Mecca, ʿAfīf encountered ʿAbbās b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib in Mina. While in their interaction, he witnessed a man emerging from a nearby tent and raising his gaze towards the sky. Observing the sun positioned in the middle of the sky, the man proceeded to engage in prayer. Subsequently, a woman and a young teenage boy emerged from the same tent and joined the man in prayer, aligning themselves behind him. Curious about their identities, al-Kindī inquired of ʿAbbās, who then revealed that the man was Muhammad, the boy was ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib (a), Muḥammad’s cousin, and the woman was Khadīja bt. Khuwaylid (a), Muḥammad’s wife. ʿAfīf al-Kindī proceeded to ask ʿAbbās about was Muḥammad (s) was doing, to which he responded, “He engages in prayer and asserts that he has been sent by Allah, yet only his wife and cousin follow him.”
One day, when Abū Ṭālib (a) had ventured outside the city, he came across his son ʿAlī (a) and his nephew Muḥammad (s) on the outskirts of Mecca. Curious about his nephew’s religious beliefs, Abū Ṭālib (a) inquired, and in response, the Prophet (s) described his religion as the true faith. Following that, Abū Ṭālib (a) directed his attention towards his son ʿAlī (a) and asked, “What is the religion you adhere to?” To which ʿAlī (a) replied, “O father! I have faith in Allah and His messenger.” Abū Ṭālib (a) then advised ʿAlī (a), saying, “Beware that he will only summon you to what is right, so follow him.”
