Agent
Semiotics employs the term agent (or operating agent) to designate the narrative role of a subject of doing, that is, of a subject engaged in the carrying out of a particular narrative programme. It contrasts with the term patient which designates a subject of state. In the sentence The knight slays the dragon', the knight is the operating agent. Equally, in the sentence The electorate opted for Labour', the body of electors is the agent carrying out its role in the narrative programme of the poll.
