Interpretation of results

Factors that affect interpretation

As implied above, many factors may affect the interpretation of plasma drug concentrations and it is impossible to go into specific detail within the confines of this chapter. Each of the following may have a bearing on the significance of a particular drug concentration at a particular time.

• pharmacokinetic factors, such as age of the patient, time since the last dose, administration of a loading dose and whether steady state has been achieved

• pharmacodynamic factors, such as receptor density, presence of interfering drugs or drug metabolites and concentration of endogenous substances such as potassium

• clinical factors, such as the severity of the primary condition and the presence of other diseases.
