Summary

There are three main aspects of the production of speech sounds in English: voicing, place of articulation and manner of articulation. We have introduced much terminology for describing speech sounds. We will look at place, manner and voicing in much more detail. We will focus on those aspects of the sound of English which relate to meaning in its broadest sense: word meaning, utterance meaning and social meaning. To do this, we will make extensive use of the categories of the International Phonetic Alphabet.
