frequency (n.)

A term derived from the study of the physics of sound, and used in ACOUSTIC PHONETICS, referring to the number of occurrences of a sound wave in a unit of time (usually a second); it is measured in hertz (Hz), a term which has replaced the older ‘cycles per second’. An increase in the frequency of a sound correlates with an auditory sensation of higher PITCH.
