fundamental frequency

A term derived from the study of the physics of sound, and used in ACOUSTIC PHONETICS, referring to the lowest FREQUENCY component in a complex sound wave. The fundamental, or F0 (f nought), sometimes called the ‘first harmonic’, is of particular importance in studies of INTONATION, where it displays a reasonably close correspondence with the PITCH movements involved.
