stability (n.)
A term used in AUTOSEGMENTAL PHONOLOGY for an effect which stems from the principle of autonomy of TIERS in the phonological REPRESENTATION: operations which apply to a SEGMENT on one tier (e.g. DELETION) will not affect any AUTOSEGMENT with which that segment was formerly associated. For example, a tone can be deleted without its corresponding vowel being deleted, and vice versa.
