switch reference

A means of showing the SEMANTIC relationship between CLAUSE elements (typically, the SUBJECTS) in a CHAIN of clauses. In a given chain, the VERB of each clause except the last indicates MORPHOLOGICALLY whether its subject is the same (SS, same subject) as the subject of the following clause, or different from it (DS, different subject). Switch-reference marking has been noted in several Australian Aboriginal languages.
