Tense vowels PALM

In vernacular NfldE varieties, most native lexical items incorporating the PALM vowel belong to the TRAP/BATH set; that is, they are articulated with [æ(:)]. More educated speakers, however, tend to use the lower more retracted vowel of LOT/ CLOTH/THOUGHT. They may even – as in the case of the speakers on the audio samples – utilize a more retracted  -like sound in PALM words than they do in LOT etc.
