Children Who Fear School

Many children wake up in the morning with fears that seem far greater than the reality, causing them to complain of dizziness, headaches, and nausea that may even lead to vomiting. Many of them cry, try to avoid school, or withdraw from others, without understanding the reason for their behavior any more than their parents do. These children suffer from school phobia, a condition in which they exaggerate ordinary situations and become terrified of things that are not truly frightening. As a result, they refuse to attend school and resort to various excuses and tactics to stay home.

Convincing a child to go to school is essential. Unfortunately, because of limited time or feelings of helplessness, some parents find it easier to give in to their child's wishes. However, when a child repeatedly succeeds in avoiding school, their academic progress and personal development are disrupted. Instead of moving forward, they begin to fall behind and regress. Sometimes, a few reassuring words are enough to encourage the child to attend school. A child may initially miss school because of a genuine illness but then refuse to return after recovering. If the symptoms persist, psychological assessment and treatment may be necessary.

According to one physician, school phobia is a broad term that encompasses several types of behavior associated with a child's resistance to attending school. These behaviors include the following:

First: Children suffering from school phobia experience great difficulty attending school, leading to prolonged absences. In many cases, they experience intense fear that a disaster will occur when they are faced with the reality of going to school. They become anxious and distressed, often imagining that something terrible will happen to their mother.

Second: Children may display emotional disturbances that surface as fear, nervous agitation, pretending to be ill, stomach pain, nausea, or dizziness. These complaints typically appear in the morning before school and may become more severe as the day progresses.

Third: When a child with school phobia stays at home, they do so with their parents' knowledge and permission. Such children should not be regarded as truants or deliberately avoiding school.

Fourth: A child suffering from school phobia is often an excellent and high-achieving student.
