The Prophet (s) held a deep affection for his cousin ʿAlī (a). At the time of ʿAlī’s birth, the Prophet (s) was 30 years old and had been married to Khadīja (a) for five years. The Prophet (s) displayed a paternal love towards ʿAlī (a). According to certain narrations, the Prophet (s) personally washed ʿAlī (a), gently moved his cradle when he was asleep, and affectionately conversed with him while he was awake.
According to renowned hadiths, some members of the Quraysh tribe, including Abū Ṭālib (a), experienced financial difficulties. In response, the Prophet (s), along with ʿAbbās b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib and Ḥamza b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, approached Abū Ṭālib (a) to offer assistance, considering his large family. In order to alleviate some of the burden on his uncle, who had taken care of him during his childhood, the Prophet (s) brought ʿAlī (a) into his own household. There is a pertinent report available that appears to be more accurate in this context. According to this report, the Prophet (s) approached his uncle and requested that one of his sons be sent to him, offering assistance in his tasks. Abū Ṭālib (a) granted the Prophet (s) the choice to select any of his sons, and the Prophet (s) chose ʿAlī (a).
Irrespective of the specific reasons why ʿAlī (a) started living in the Prophet’s house, it is undeniable that he was indeed raised there, growing up under the care and guidance of his cousin, who was widely recognized for his integrity, virtuous character, and trustworthiness. In the household of the Prophet (s), ʿAlī (a) witnessed the brilliance of Prophethood and breathed its scent. Muhammad served as a compassionate father figure to ʿAlī (a), while ʿAlī (a), in turn, was the most obedient and dutiful son to Muḥammad (s).
