During this period, the event of the Night Journey and Ascension (al-Isra’ and al-Mi‘raj) served to strengthen the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) in his long path of resistance. It was also an honor bestowed upon him after many long years of effort and steadfastness, and a culmination of the bitter hardships and suffering he had endured in confronting the forces of polytheism and misguidance. Allah raised him to the heart of the heavens to show him aspects of the magnificent greatness of His dominion throughout the vast universe, and to reveal to him some of the secrets of creation and the destinies of the righteous and the wicked.
At the same time, the event served as a test of his companions’ ability to comprehend the extent to which they would struggle alongside their Messenger and leader in conveying the message and building a righteous human being. It was also a difficult trial for those with weak souls.
The polytheistic Quraysh were unable to grasp the lofty meanings behind the Night Journey. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) told them about it, they immediately began asking about its physical aspects, whether it was possible, and what evidence supported its occurrence. Some of them said, “By Allah, a caravan takes a month to travel from Mecca to Syria going there, and another month to return. Could Muhammad make that journey in one night and come back?!”
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) then described the Al-Aqsa Mosque to them in precise detail. He also told them that he had passed by a caravan whose members were searching for a camel that had gone missing. Among their belongings was a bowl of water that had been left uncovered, and he had covered it just as it was.
They also asked him about another caravan. He said, “I passed by it at al-Tan‘im.” He described its loads and appearance to them and said, “A certain camel is leading it, and it will appear before you at sunrise.” Everything he had told them came true exactly as he had described.
