During Shawwāl 8/January-February 630, Ali (a) stood alongside the Prophet (s) as they embarked on the Battle of Taif and laid siege to the Thaqīf tribe. During the siege of Taif, Ali (a) was assigned by the Prophet (s) to lead an expedition aimed at dismantling and destroying the idols of the Khathʿam clan. During the conflicts that took place in that region, Imam Ali (a) defeated a renowned warrior from the tribe and, upon dismantling their idols, he rejoined the Prophet (s). Upon Ali’s arrival, the Prophet (s) recited the takbīr and had a private conversation with him for a period of time.
According to a hadith, when their private conversation extended, a few of the Prophet’s companions expressed their dissatisfaction, saying, “Why do you hold whispered conversations with him and not with us? Why do you have private meetings with him and not with us?” In response, the Prophet (s) clarified, saying, “I did not engage in a whispered conversation with him, but rather, it was God who did.”
Verse 12 of Surah al-Mujādala (58) in the Quran is commonly referred to as Najwā Verse or the Verse of Whispered Conversation. The verses says: “O you who have faith! When you converse privately with the Apostle, offer a charity before your private talk. That is better for you and purer. But if you cannot afford [to make the offering], then Allah is indeed all-forgiving, all-merciful”. Among the companions of the Prophet (s), the only one who adhered to the instructions of this verse was Ali b. Abī Ṭālib (a). In this regard, he stated, “Neither before me nor after me did anyone comply with this verse. I possessed only one dinar, which I exchanged for 10 dirhams. For each instance of private conversation with the Prophet (s), I donated one dirham until it was all depleted.”
