Demonstration. - Send a current through a solution of copper sulphate placed in the U-tube, Fig. 1, and it will be found that bubbles of oxygen rise from the anode, while the cathode will be coated with copper.

The action of the current in this demonstration is to separate the CuSO, into +Cu, which goes with the current toward the cathode and is deposited upon it, and - SO4 which goes toward the anode and decomposes the H₂O of the solution H₂SO4, setting oxygen free.
