A plane mirror is a plane surface that reflects regularly a large part of the light that falls upon it. If a person stands in front of a plane mirror, he sees his image apparently behind it. If he walks toward the mirror, the image does the same. If he steps to one side, the image does also. If he looks at the image of a stationary object, it remains in the same place however much he changes his position. This kind of image is called a virtual image because it does not really exist at the place where it appears to be, but is caused by divergent rays of light that come from the object and are reflected from the mirror.
