egressive (adj.)

A term used in the PHONETIC classification of speech sounds, referring to all sounds produced using an outwards-moving AIRSTREAM MECHANISM. The opposite category is INGRESSIVE, which is an uncommon mode for speech production. The vast majority of speech sounds are made with egressive air from the lungs (PULMONIC air).
