extraction (n.)

A term used in GRAMMAR for a SYNTACTIC process which moves a CONSTITUENT from within a UNIT to a position outside that unit. For example, it is possible to take the SUBJECT John in the SENTENCE John saw the elephant and extract it to function as HEAD of the COMPLEMENT in the associated CLEFT sentence: It was John who saw an elephant.
