In foreign-language learning, the influence of a person’s first language on the language being acquired. Transfer effects form part of a person’s INTERLANGUAGE.

In SEMANTICS, any process which enables the same linguistic expression to refer to different sorts of things. The notion includes various kinds of figurative language (such as METAPHOR).
