A term used, especially in RELATIONAL GRAMMAR, for inTRANSITIVE VERBS whose SUBJECTS originate as OBJECTS. Break in The vase broke is such a verb, the vase being understood in the same way as it is in John broke the vase, where it is an object. Unaccusative verbs are also known as ERGATIVE verbs.
