The THOUGHT vowel is rendered as /ɔ/, merging with LOT, CLOTH and FORCE. A spelling-derived /a/ occurs in bald, Balkan, malt, Malta and /au/, another spelling pronunciation, is very common in some words with orthographic au like laud and its derivatives, gaunt and haunt.
