pseudo-procedure (n.)

A term sometimes used in LINGUISTICS and PHONETICS to refer to an analytic procedure which claims to work in a certain way, but which is in fact incapable of doing so, e.g. to assume that PHONOLOGICAL distinctions can be established by scrutinizing the ACOUSTIC patterns displayed on a SPECTROGRAM, or that it is possible to do GRAMMATICAL analysis without reference to MEANING.
