/l/ is generally “dark” or velar [Ɨ], especially in syllable codas. Syllabic /l/ in English is often replaced by [o] in the basilect, for instance in [tʃɹɑbo] ‘trouble’, [æpo] ‘apple’, [phipo] ‘people’. Preconsonantal /l/ may become [o], [ʊ] or [u] – for example: [meok] ‘milk’, [hæup] ’help’. In some words, there is variation, such as [rio] ~ [riu] ~ [ril] ‘real’.
