Learning support for effective differentiation, teaching and learning

It is clear from experience that the relationship between educators and pupil is absolutely crucial as a mediator in the learning and in the social interactions that take place. The educator can have great influence on the learning experience of the pupil both as a skilled professional, but also as an advocate for a young person with a disability.

Here are some suggestions:

■ Keep up a positive attitude and encourage peer support and interaction between the pupil who is disabled and other pupils in the classroom.

■ By knowing students’ interests and their own needs and strengths, the teaching assistant is a vital mediator and advocate in the classroom.

■ In order to choose relevant materials, the teacher will need advice from the teaching assistant who will be able to ask significant questions and make any assessments more relevant to the young person with a disability.

■ Communication at various levels is vital in the job. Educators need to gain rapport with the pupils because a positive personal relationship will facilitate learning. He or she also needs to have great clarity and purpose when talking to colleagues in acting as an advocate and explaining the pupils’ responses to the learning environment and learning needs.

■ Educators working with children should be aware of the powerful impact of focused praise and encouragement. This applies to all children, not just disabled pupils.

Teaching assistants will be integrally involved in the following:

planning– giving advice about mode of presentation

groups– deciding on which activities and resources are appropriate

content and outcome– understanding and contributing to the content and recording the outcomes of activities
