- The arrangement for maximum current is not usually the one for maximum efficiency; for, if the internal resistance is equal to the external, just half the work of the current is spent in overcoming resistance in the cells; that is, the efficiency is just 50 per cent. The efficiency will increase if the external resistance is made large compared with the internal, for now the greater part of the work will be employed outside the cell. This means that a cell cannot work efficiently when sending a heavy current.
