KIT is ‘split’ between the realizations [ɪ] and in General, and [i] and to [ə] in Broad. The split is an allophonic variation, with the fronter realization occurring in velar and palatal environments, and the more central one occurring elsewhere. Cultivated WSAfE lacks this split, but KIT is a reliable sociolinguistic marker for White South African English in general. Before [Ɨ], the vowel may be as far back as [ɪ].
